Macroom Tidy Towns

Looking ahead to 2024:

Macroom Tidy Towns celebrated a highly positive adjudication report with a score increase of 11 points and were awarded a Silver Medal again in 2023. A revised map (see below) was submitted with the application, this map and new signage allowed the visitors to admire the many different sites and projects in development.

As we progress from 2023 into 2024, interlinking between all our media platforms and those of other groups and organisations in the community will lead to increased cohesiveness in all initiatives, projects and endeavours, so with that in mind the development of our new Macroom Tidy Towns website and expansion of social media will be continuing apace.

Other substantial very positive recent milestones include the Macroom N22 Bypass which opened this year and the benefits are already tangible, with reduced noise, congestion, traffic pollution and with ongoing air monitoring to assess the benefits of the bypass. The Briery Gap Theatre renovation work is close to completion, is due to open in mid 2024 and will be a focal point in the town centre. The Macroom Heritage Led Regeneration plan is being drawn up presently, and we eagerly await this report in due course as this will complement the planned town centre upgrade to our roads and footpaths etc.

Macroom Tidy Towns works closely with both the primary & post primary schools in the town, in the context of the 'Green Flag' sustainability programme, and with senior years cycle working towards volunteering and inclusivity. We have a number of foreign nationals who are regular volunteers, this is a great way to get to know your area and develop a sense of pride in the place where you live.

The Tidy Towns volunteers are working on a myriad of projects, from seating areas, to litter picking, to nesting boxes for indigenous birds, rain harvesting planter testing etc, and the breadth and variety of this work is crucial not only for the cleanliness and quality of life of our town, but also to matters of sustainability, biodiversity and innovative community initiatives.

As with any undertaking with so many different strands and sections, the more volunteers and helpers who contribute to the Tidy Towns in whatever capacity they can, even from time to time, the stronger our efforts and the more we can enjoy the results of our projects. As a volunteer, you can contribute to the enhancement and upkeep of your town, as well as shaping its future in the years to come: https://macroomtidytowns.ie/Contact-Us.php
