Macroom Tidy Towns

Looking ahead to 2025:

Macroom Tidy Towns celebrated their first gold medal in the Tidy Towns competition in 2024 with   a very positive adjudication report and a 14 point score increase . A revised map (see below) was submitted with the 2025 application. This map and new signage allows the visitors to admire the many different sites and projects in development.

Progressing from 2024 into 2025:  Macroom was named as the decarbonisation zone pilot town for County Cork under the Climate Action Plan 2024-2029. We have initiated and are completing many climate, sustainability and biodiversity projects, including cycleways, biodiversity areas and a biodiversity action plan,  (see map). Interlinking between our website https://macroom tidytowns.ie/ ,social media platforms, and those of other groups and organisations in the community is continuing. This is leading to increased collaboration in all initiatives, projects and endeavours.

Other substantial very positive recent milestones include the Macroom N22 Bypass which opened in 2023 and the benefits are already tangible with reduced noise, congestion, traffic pollution and ongoing air monitoring to assess the benefits of the bypass. The Briery Gap Theatre renovation opened in 2024 and is a focal point in the town centre. The Macroom Heritage led Regeneration plan is under consultation. This will complement the planned town centre upgrade to our roads, footpaths and active travel network.

Macroom Tidy Towns works closely with both the primary & post primary schools in the town, in the context of the 'Green Flag' sustainability programme, and with senior years cycle working towards volunteering and inclusivity. We have a number of foreign nationals who are regular volunteers, this is a great way to get to know your area and develop a sense of pride in the place where you live.

The Tidy Towns volunteers are working on a myriad of other projects, from seating areas, to litter picking, to nesting boxes for indigenous birds, rain harvesting planter evaluation, bee scrapes etc, and the breadth and variety of this work is crucial not only for the cleanliness and quality of life of our town, but also to matters of sustainability, biodiversity and community initiatives.

As with any undertaking with so many different strands and sections, the more volunteers and helpers who contribute to the Tidy Towns in whatever capacity they can,the greater the benefits for the community. The stronger our efforts, the more we can enjoy the results of our projects. As a volunteer, you can contribute to the enhancement and upkeep of your town, as well as shaping its future in the years to come: https://macroomtidytowns.ie/Contact-Us.php
