Bienvenus, Benvenuti to our friends from Bubry, Brittany and Marcallo con Casone, Lombardia. French and Irish groups have now been exchanging visits since 1980 and our Italian ‘twins’ have been coming since 2002. But this is the first time there has been an official twinning exchange during the summer, so we hope it will not disappoint. A great weekend of music and fun is planned, with Aghinagh Comhaltas showing the way, backed up by Bagad de Bubry. We hope the people of the Lee Valley will come out in great numbers for the official parade and twinning ceremony in the Square at 6.30 on Saturday and the Céilí in the Castle Hotel at 10 p.m. on Sunday. All are welcome to this free event.

The Lee Valley has enjoyed many midsummer celebrations this year, with crowds coming out for fundraisers and fun. The Féile Tine in Gougane Barra was a great success, with traditional musicians delighting the audience in the Theatre by the Lake. Hundreds participated in the Liz Lucey Memorial Run in Baile Mhúirne and the Daniel Kingston Memorial Run in Macroom. Before the summer break, Rusheen N.S. celebrated the opening of an extension to their 125 year old school. G.A.A. Summer camps are keeping children happy and active as the long summer holiday stretches ahead.

One of the oldest schools in the country, Dromleigh N.S., is currently celebrating 170 years of service to the Kilmichael community. They have just added a marvellous new extension, with new classrooms, a generous purpose room, staff room and all the fittings of the 21st century. It’s quite a step from one class room, earthen toilets and open fires to whiteboards and CCTV. The Minister, Batt O’Keeffe, who had responsibility for education when funding for the Dromleigh upgrade was allocated, was on hand to cut the tape for the official opening of the school on the last day of May. There will be an Open Day at the school on June 13 and a Family Fun Day in Annahala on June 20.

Plans are well under way now for the forthcoming Twinning celebrations to mark 30 years of exchange between Macroom and Bubry, Brittany, France. It is also Macroom’s turn to host visitors from Bubry and Marcallo con Casone, Italy, and two days packed with activity are planned for the occasion. The visitors, 42 from Bubry and 11 from Marcallo con Casone, will arrive on Friday July 9 and will have dinner and entertainment before going to stay with host families in the region. On Saturday morning they will visit Gaeltacht Mhúscraí and sample some of the local produce and culture before returning for the parade and official ceremonies in the Town Square on Saturday afternoon, followed by an official reception in Coolcower on Saturday night. The visitors will tour West Cork on Sunday and will enjoy another evening of traditional music on Sunday night, before departing early on Monday morning.

This will be a very busy weekend in Macroom as the Corpus Christi procession, deferred from last Sunday because of heavy traffic to Killarney for the Cork – Kerry game, is scheduled to go ahead on Sunday 13. However, the traffic will be going in the other direction this time round as last Sunday’s match was a draw and the replay will now be in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Come on the Rebels!

Groups relaxing at kerbside tables outside restaurants and bars are a welcome sight. The town and villages in the Lee Valley are looking great, thanks in no small measure to their Tidy Towns Committees. Family groups may also be seen on the banks of the local rivers, with some brave souls even taking to the water. Please remember to remove your litter.

We wish all sitting Junior and Leaving Cert and Third Level exams every blessing and success in the days and weeks ahead. Our three second level schools in Macroom were all celebrating recently. St. Mary’s were declared All Ireland winners of AIB Build a Bank Challenge 2010, earning great kudos for themselves and their teacher and winning a laptop each and a whiteboard for the school.
The long dry spell which continued for most of April has, eventually, come to an end and April showers are now extending in to May. In ancient times, Fionn and the Fianna moved outdoors from May Day- Bealtaine – to Hallowe’en – Samhain. But night frosts, forecast for the coming week, make the thought of camping out decidedly unattractive.
